Element Segregation in Low-metallicity Stars and the Primordial Lithium Abundance

چکیده
Observational constraints on the primordial lithium abundance are important for the evaluation of the baryonic density of the universe. Its precise determination however suffers from uncertainties due to the possible depletion of this element inside the stars. Here we present and discuss new results on the lithium abundances in Pop II stars obtained with most recent stellar models including the best available physics. We show that it is possible to account for the general behavior of lithium observed in Pop II stars without any free parameters. Macroscopic motions inside the stars are needed but it is not necessary to specify their exact nature to interpret the observational data. This constatation allows to derive a parameter-free value for the lithium primordial abundance : log Lip = 2.35± .10 in the logH = 12 scale. Carbon-enhanced Hyper-metal-poor Stars and the Stellar Imf at Low Metallicity
The two known “hyper-metal-poor” (HMP) stars, HE0107-5240 and HE1327-2326, have extremely high enhancements of the light elements C, N, and O relative to Fe and appear to represent a statistically significant excess population relative to the halo metallicity distribution extrapolated from [Fe/H] > −3. This study weighs the available evidence for and against three hypothetical origins for these...
متن کاملPrimordial Lithium and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.
Recent determinations of the abundance of the light-element Li in very metal-poor stars show that its intrinsic dispersion is essentially zero and that the random error in the estimated mean Li abundance is negligible. However, a decreasing trend in the Li abundance toward lower metallicity indicates that the primordial abundance of Li can be inferred only after allowing for nucleosynthesis pro...
متن کاملLi isotopes in metal-poor halo dwarfs, a more and more complicated story
The nuclei of the lithium isotopes are fragile, easily destroyed, so that, at variance with most of the other elements, they cannot be formed in stars through steady hydrostatic nucleosynthesis. The Li isotope is synthesized during primordial nucleosynthesis in the first minutes after the Big Bang and later by cosmic rays, by novae and in pulsations of AGB stars (possibly also by the ν process)...
متن کاملLight Element Settling in Main-Sequence Pop II Stars and the Primordial Lithium Abundance
While theoretical computations of the lithium abundances in Pop II stars predict variations from star to star, the most recent observations confirm the existence of a “lithium plateau” with no abundance dispersion. This apparent paradox has to be faced and a solution has to be found before deriving the primordial lithium abundance. In any case lithium 7 has been depleted in these stars by at le...
متن کاملLithium abundance in a turnoff halo star on an extreme orbit
Context. The lithium abundance in turnoff stars of the old population of our Galaxy is remarkably constant in the metallicity interval −2.8 < [Fe/H] < −2.0, defining a plateau. The Li abundance of these turnoff stars is clearly lower than the abundance predicted by the primordial nucleosynthesis in the frame of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis. Different scenarios have been proposed for ex...
